Shell or Gravel?
Both are loose-surface driveways and both are built the same way underneath. The difference is the material on top, and it is mostly a question of look and feel. If you want a hard, smooth surface instead, that is asphalt paving.

Why Do Most Shell Driveways Fail?
Most shell driveways that fail were never really built. Shell got tipped on sand, spread with a rake, and within a season it had migrated into the lawn, sunk into ruts and thinned to nothing where the tyres run.
A shell or gravel driveway is a proper surface with a proper base. The ground is graded so water runs off rather than pooling, a compacted base course goes down, the edges are contained so the material cannot walk away, and only then does the finish layer go on. Done that way it holds its shape for years and needs nothing more than an occasional top-up.

Is a shell driveway a good idea in Sarasota?
Yes, and it is one of the most traditional surfaces on the Gulf Coast for good reason. Shell drains instantly, which matters in a place with daily summer downpours, it stays cooler than asphalt in the sun, and it suits the look of coastal properties. It needs a properly built base to last, which is where most DIY shell driveways go wrong.
How is a shell driveway different from Shellcrete?
They are completely different products. A shell driveway is a loose surface of crushed shell over a compacted base. The other is a poured concrete mix with shell in it, installed by concrete contractors. We build the loose-surface kind.
How long does a shell driveway last?
Built on a proper base with edging, the structure lasts for many years. The surface layer slowly compacts and wears where the tyres run, so most driveways benefit from a top-up of fresh shell every few years. That is a small job, not a rebuild.
Does shell track into the house?
Fine shell can, especially when new. It settles quickly as the surface packs down, and a short paved or stepping-stone apron at the door stops most of it. Gravel tracks less, which is one reason some people choose it.
Can you refresh an existing shell or gravel driveway?
Yes. Most existing driveways just need regrading to fix the ruts and low spots, edges reset where material has wandered, and a fresh layer on top. It is far cheaper than starting again and it is most of the work we do on shell.
